Lion's Share Federal Credit Union has progressed rapidly since organization. It was founded at the Food Lion corporate office as Food Lion Credit Association CU, early in 1982 and has benefited from tremendous growth. The idea was formulated by a group of Food Lion employees who were enthusiastic about starting a credit union and were confident of the participation of Food Lion employees. Company management agreed with the idea and extended its encouragement and support to get the credit union started.
A charter was issued by the State of North Carolina on January 4, 1982 and the charter members were accepted in April of 1982. Membership has grown now close to 12,000 and assets are now close to thiry million dollars.
As Food Lion, LLC branched out with banner names other than Food Lion, such as Sweetbay, Harvey's, Reid's, bloom and Bottom Dollar, we recognized the fact that to be more enticing to the associates of all the banners, we might need a name that was all inclusive. After searching for months, our Board of Directors decided on Lion's Share Credit Union. We stayed true to our founder, the Lion; yet came up with a credit union name that would include all the banners. In April, 2007 we officially became Lion's Share Credit Union. In 2009, our members voted and we became a federally chartered credit union.This time we just tweaked our name and it is now officially Lion's Share Federal Credit Union.
As we look to the future of the financial services industry, we recognize the serious challenges in front of us and our challenge of delivering quality member service to members located throughout the United States.
